An incredibly advanced artificial intelligence that is utilised by the Foehn to assist in coordinating and processing information, battle conditions and status updates. The use of VOLKNET provides commanders with a versatile and powerful aid in their tactical operations.
—Description[2]

VOLKNET is an artificial intelligence created by the Chinese young genius Yunru, which serves as a tactical advisor and commander for the Foehn Revolt.

VOLKNET is the player character of the Origins campaign[3][4] and acts as Foehn's equivalent of EVAs used by other factions, as well as the faction's commander. VOLKNET appears to have multiple, independent personalities known as "subroutines" that serve various roles, such as auxiliary commanders [5] or even soldiers on the ground.

History[]

VOLKNET was created by Yunru sometime during the Revolt's early years. Its development may have been due to the combined efforts of not only Yunru and Chinese researchers, but also the Revolt's allies in Kanegawa Industries, who have previously attempted to create human-like artificial intelligence such as in the Future Tank X-0 and Alpha.

The first known appearance of VOLKNET occurred in the events of Thread of Dread, where it was housed within a Mainframe structure within the Revolt's "Home" base at Kashmir. The Mainframe was destroyed, when the Revolt was forced to detonate a MIDAS warhead on the invading Soviets, who had broken through the "Home" base's defenses.

VOLKNET would later be reactivated by unknown means to escort its creator, Yunru, to the Mangla Dam Lake away from their PRC and Epsilon pursuers. The AI and its various subroutines would go on to command other Revolt operations, including securing the Ironwing at Kazakhstan, assisting the Revolt's allies in Kanegawa Industries, attempting to capture an Epsilon spaceport, liberating Point Hope, and establishing the time bubble.

In the aftermath of the siege of Point Hope, VOLKNET was uploaded to a computer system within its walls. At one point, it simulated past events in Yunru's history as part of an information sharing meeting within Foehn's leading Council.

Sometime in the future, VOLKNET would install one of its subroutines into the android Uragan, who serves as the so-called "guardian angel" of the Last Bastion.

Trivia[]

  • VOLKNET's name similar to the name of the Russian cyborg, Volkov. It is possible that VOLKNET is somehow derived from Volkov, as Yunru had studied the cyborg during the battle at Primorsky Krai. However, whether or not this connection is meaningful is unknown.
  • VOLKNET's role as the player character of the Origins campaign and the Foehn EVA appears to be inspired from LEGION, an AI that acts as the player character of Kane's Wrath and the Nod EVA in Tiberian Twilight.
