In return for supplying the Chinese with a Psychic Beacon, to help them suppress insurgents in their country, PsiCorps makes a deal to have their troops enter Japan. Secretly, they approach a Kanegawa Industries complex in order to steal technologies and intel required for their future plans.
—Mission description

Operation: Think Different is the seventh Epsilon Act One campaign mission.

Briefing[]

Yuri's Message: "It's been a while Proselyte, and you have performed admirably. Things are not looking good for our comrades in the Kremlin - while organized resistance in the U.S. has fallen apart, that hasn't stopped legions of American militia from tying down our soldiers. Only the St. Louis Beacon remains, and with their Comrade-Commander away on other tasks, others have decided it is time to attack, and we will lose that Beacon too. It's sad too, that Comrade mirrors you in a way, and your achievements. Another Commander, a particular stubborn American one, not only was the one who freed New York City and Chicago, but just recently hit our Union's primary MIDAS production plant. Interestingly, the High Command did not made this news public to the Soviet commanders. As I foresaw enough, I acquired two of them in time, and erased the memory of them off of most people. They will be needed as we move onto the next phase.

China has entered the war, advancing into Europe and along into Japan. While this is formidable, the rash PRC doubted the power of the separatists on their own lands, who have launched their own gambit to topple Beijing. I helped our Chinese comrades by constructing a Beacon in their lands, and in return, they let us operate inside their conquered land in Japan. With this, we will join an assault on a vital Kanegawa Industries facility. Being in this place is not a part of the deal, so I must refrain from sending you any PsiCorps Troopers not to expose us. Take over the first wave's outpost they construct and get out before the next wave arrives, otherwise they will know we're just using them."

Objective 1 & 2: Capture the Allied Tech Center & destroy enemy forces.
Note: Destroy important buildings to force their surrender.

Events[]

Taking the Chinese forward base[]

The Chinese commander sent some Qilin Tanks, Nuwa Cannons and an MCV to the battlefield, triggering a chain reaction of barrel explosions by detonating one barrel and destroying a weakly guarded Japanese industrial base. Concurrently, the Proselyte's team lurked in the valley and observed the attack in secret. He found the Chinese commander's progress a bit slow, as he was still busy with the remnants of the industrial base. Although an MCV had already been sent, he waited for some time.

When the Chinese troops left, the Proselyte quickly sent the whole team and occupied the Chinese base, including its Construction Yard. Before capturing the Barracks, he also wisely sent an Infiltrator into the building to gain an edge in the form of infantry veterancy. Then, his advisor told him that that Chinese commander's mind had been seized - if the second wave arrives, however, there would be trouble. The Proselyte needed to hurry up.

Capturing the Tech Center[]

The Proselyte had only a bit more than an hour to accomplish his objective. He trained a lot of Attack Dogs and Flak Troopers to eliminate the incoming infantry waves and assaulting Zephyrs. Next, he allowed the infantry to advance toward the nearby patch of ore, wiped out the defenders there, and allowed his War Miner to start mining safely. He vigorously developed his economy and trained a large number of forces including Pyros, and then let them and Flak Troopers move eastwards, discovering an abandoned outpost after destroying the defenders there. He immediately seized the outpost, which conveniently contained a Tech Base Expansion Post and a few Tech Oil Derricks.

As the Proselyte developed his base, he built the Atomheart, allowing him to assemble a number of Tesla Troopers, Kirov Airships and Eradicators to form a formidable attack team. His Spy Planes constantly investigated and observed the battlefield, eventually finding a rather curious base on the northwest side: not only there were many Technical Trucks parked at the base, the outpost also appeared to house a few peculiar vehicle designs he had never seen before, which were inoperational. It seemed that they were in development at this location.

The Proselyte carried on with his offensive against the enemy. The entire infantry squad continued to advance, destroying enemy forces along the way, including Battle Tortoises carrying Siege Cadres. The army kept heading for the Pacific Front base, as his Kirov Airships advanced along the edge of the battlefield to hit the enemy's production facilities. Eventually, the infantry team successfully broke through the defence line, destroying the key buildings. Along the way, he encountered prototypes of yet another peculiar vehicle design - the Future Tank X-0. After the defenders were dealt with, the Proselyte sent an Engineer to capture the Tech Center and retrieve the research they were after.

Eliminating evidence[]

Even though PsiCorps got what they needed, they needed to help China complete the objectives assigned; otherwise there would be doubts and suspicions from the Chinese command. However, at this point it wasn't difficult to accomplish - the base of the Pacific Front was eventually destroyed, and the Japanese commander eventually laid down his arms and surrendered to the Chinese attacker. After completing the mission, the Proselyte released the Chinese commander and quietly left the scene.

Aftermath[]

The data acquired from this site was much more valuable than I could expect.. We've released the Chinese commander and had him report on 'his' success. The second army has been diverted to another battlefield. This should give us time to cover our tracks.
—Yuri's message

After the Proselyte acquired everything the PsiCorps needed, he released the Chinese commander leading the initial taskforce from the mind control and had him report 'his' success to the supervisors. The success of the inexperienced Chinese commander has surprised the Chinese command, letting them divert the second army elsewhere. This gave the Proselyte enough time to cover up his involvement in the attack.

Later on, Yuri instructed the Proselyte to help the separatists in Xizang capture the Psychic Beacon Yuri has helped set up earlier, in order to turn the Comintern against each other and allow the PsiCorps to advance their plans further.

Easter egg[]

SPOILER
There is still potential in an idea of a mobile jammer. We should explore it in the future.

Directly north of the battlefield where the Black Widow and Black Eagles can be found, there is a neutral Mobile Gap Generator. If captured by an Engineer, the quote mentioned above will appear, and two crates (one money crate and the one veterancy crate) will appear in the wooden planks area southwest of where the Mobile Gap Generator can be found.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In version 3.0, the infiltration units were Saboteurs, and more of them could be trained by the player. The player needed to infiltrate the Tech Center instead of capturing it.
  • This mission was originally built by Cesare for vanilla Yuri's Revenge. While the layout was mostly the same, the mission was set in Sicily instead and required the player to take out an Allied Spysat Comlink.[1]
