The Soviet Union (also known as the Soviets or the Comintern), was an economic, military and political alliance between various communist factions and governments in the world, led by Russia.

The Soviet Union consisted of three major members: Russia, the People's People of China (PRC), and the Latin Confederation.

Soviet militaries often fielded massive quantities of heavy tanks to overwhelm their enemies with firepower. They were also infamous for utilizing controversial weapons such as suicide bombers, nuclear weapons, and flamethrowers. While not as technologically advanced as the the other factions, the Soviet military has nevertheless scored many victories by simply overpowering their rivals with conventional weapons.

The Soviets are one of the three original factions from Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. In Mental Omega, vanilla units in the Soviet arsenal are reworked and new units are added.

History[]

Second Great War[]

The Soviet Union was established in 30 December at the end of the Russian Civil War. Leadership of the Soviet Union eventually fell on Joseph Stalin in 1924, who came into conflict with the Allied Nations in the Second Great War. Around this time, the infamous cyborg Volkov, and his faithful partner Chitzkoi, served the Soviet army, marking the first use of cybernetically augmented soldiers in war.

Stalin was advised by the psychic Yuri and attempted to create a division of mind-controlling psychics, called the PsiCorps, as weapon against the Allies. Before this could happen, the Allies defeated the Soviet Union. Stalin was presumed dead and Yuri went into hiding.

Post Second Great War[]

After the war, the country of Russia would be occupied by American forces, who installed a puppet premier Alexander Romanov to stabilize the country. Soon after, Yuri and his PsiCorps re-emerged, serving as personal advisor to Romanov. Yuri persuaded Romanov to rebuild the Soviet army and assisted in its rearmament.

In 12 May 1972, the Russian commando Boris and his protege, José Arcadio Morales, snuck into an Allied research base in order to retrieve the bodies of Volkov and Chitzkoi for the next war. While the operation was successful, unbeknownst to the Russians, Yuri had dispatched PsiCorps agents in an attempt to sabotage the operation and prevent the revival of mind-control immune, cybernetic soldiers.

Under Yuri's recommendation, the Soviets waited until after the death of Albert Einstein to declare war, as Einstein's advanced technology was paramount to the Allies' previous victory.

Around this time, the Russia formed a military alliance with the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Latin Confederation.

Third Great War[]

On 7 March 1982, the Soviet Union launched a full-scale invasion on the Allied Nations. During the battle of New York, the Russian hero, Boris, was killed in action. His death was reported to be a heroic sacrifice, but mysterious circumstances around his death drew the suspicion of his student, Morales.

At this time, a newly appointed Soviet General was rising in prominence due to his many victories, including the assassination of U.S. President Michael Dugan and the successful defense of Vladivostok against Pacific Front forces.

To conquer the United States, Yuri proposed the construction of a psychic beacon network to seize the country with mind control. Soviet forces were ordered to construct a psychic beacon in St. Louis, as well as a psychic amplifier in Chicago to complete the network. While the beacon in St. Louis was successfully activated, the amplifier in Chicago had been destroyed by the Allies, prompting Russian High Command to order a MIDAS strike on the city.

Although the MIDAS strike resulted in a decisive victory in the US, turmoil brewed within the Kremlin leadership due to various incidents, such as the military setbacks in Europe, the suspicious circumstances of China's conquest of Japan, and the theft of a Stalin's Fist, the latter of which cast doubt on the Soviet General's loyalty.

While the Soviet General attempted to prove his loyalty, jealous peers in High Command continued to fear his growing popularity and sought to dispose of a rising political rival. To ensure his own security, the Soviet General, alongside Colonel Krukov and Reznov, struck against a joint European and Pacific Front base which had been stealing US technology from the corpse of the American nation. This victory won the Soviet General the loyalty of some spiteful American defectors, who were furious at their allies' betrayal.

Eventually, High Command declassified the destruction of the MIDAS enrichment facilities and several warheads by Allied operatives. Yuri then revealed to Kremlin leadership that he had concealed the last two warheads in existence. This, and the unexpected discovery of a psychic beacon on Chinese soil, drew the suspicion of the Soviet General on Yuri and the Chinese.

Meanwhile in Europe, the Allies were on the run from the Soviets. A MIDAS warhead was used to annihilate the Europeans' Black Forest Lab, while the final warhead was intended to be used on the last vestiges of Allied resistance in Great Britain. This plan was thwarted, due to the British Gladius Defense System, an ICBM interceptor that could shoot down a MIDAS in-flight. Thus, the Soviets attempted a naval invasion to destroy the Gladius, but failed. Nonetheless, the Third Great War had ended with the total victory of the Soviet Union.

Sino-Soviet War[]

Despite the war's conclusion, several mysteries within the Soviet Union remained. Romanov and Soviet General summoned Yuri for questioning, but the psychic had disappeared, placing further doubt on Yuri's loyalty.

Worse still, the Soviet General had discovered a secret pact between the Chinese and Pacific Front, which served to further China's goal of supplanting Russia as leader of the Comintern. This revelation incited the Sino-Soviet War. Russian forces attempted to launch their final MIDAS warhead on China, but were intercepted by Chinese saboteurs, causing the last warhead to disappear in the chaos. The war ended with Russia's victory, after the Soviet General defeated a Chinese advance on Primorsky Krai.

In the middle of this war, Yuri's PsiCorps had set their own plans into motion and erased all data regarding their technology from the Soviet Arsenal. Despite this, the PsiCorps would continue to support the Russians as a rogue organization.

Interbellum[]

Soviet Russia would remain as the world's sole superpower for the next two years. Though the PsiCorps' had technically gone renegade and the Russians no longer possessed any MIDAS warheads nor the means to produce them, the Kremlin was more than willing to conceal these facts, as the threat of the PsiCorps and the MIDAS cowed many nations, such as China, into submission.

Mental Omega War[]

On 1 September 1984, Yuri re-emerged and launched a simultaneous attack on Soviet bases across the world with his new Epsilon Army. The Soviet Union was thrown into chaos as the entire Soviet leadership, including Premier Romanov and High Command, was killed in a decapitation strike, and their bases across the world were mind-controlled or overrun. With Soviet forces in complete disarray, the Soviet General assumed command over what forces remained and began a counterattack against the Epsilon threat.

Backed into a corner, the Soviets began negotiations with the Chinese to form an alliance to combat Yuri. Epsilon forces attempted to disrupt the talks in Singapore by launching an invasion of the city. While the defense was successful, the negotiations fell through as the Russians deemed the Chinese demands as "ridiculous". Worse still, Krukov and Reznov had discovered a secretive Chinese research facility that had successfully reverse-engineered Russian cybernetics. In truth, China had the capability to mass-produce a cyborg army, but intentionally withheld these forces so that the Russians and Latins would suffer the brunt of casualties at Singapore.

Incensed at another Chinese betrayal, the Russians assaulted China's military headquarters and raided a Kashmiri research facility to seize the byproducts of China's research. This operation seemed successful at first, as the Soviets managed to obtain the designs for the Centurion Siege Crawler and Cyborg Vanguard. Unfortunately, it turned out that the Kashmiri researchers somehow came into possession of the last MIDAS warhead and detonated it on the invading Soviets, killing Morales in the process.

Despite the heavy toll of the Chinese campaign, the Soviet forces pressed forward and discovered the existence of an Epsilon base on the Moon. Using stolen Epsilon spacecraft, managed to wrestle control over the moonbase. On the Moon, Morales' suspicions were vindicated, after the Soviets discovered that Boris was, in fact, assassinated by PsiCorps, who stole his corpse and resurrected it through cybernetic augmentations. Additionally, intel on the Moon revealed Yuri's location, Moscow, and they began an operation to cut off the head of Epsilon in order to end the war.

Back on Earth, Soviet forces on the ground began the march to Moscow. A task force in the far east recovered an Apocalypse Tank manufacturing plant in the Ural Mountains from Epsilon's control, while a task force in the west laid siege to Stalingrad to cripple an Epsilon production facility and disable a psychic amplifier threatening their advance.

Due to the presence of a second psychic amplifier in Moscow, Soviets forces were unable to approach the city. Thus, the Soviets repurposed the moonbase for an orbital bombardment on the amplifier. This would be thwarted by Yuri's new Spatha system, an interceptor network reverse-engineered from the Allies' Gladius system and Soviet Topol-Ms. Therefore, the main task force, under the command of the Soviet General, launched an assault to disable the Spathas, clearing the way for the Soviets' orbital missiles to annihilate Epsilon positions and the amplifier at Moscow.

In the aftermath, Yuri himself had seized control of the mind control immune Volkov by using psychokinetic abilities to puppeteer the cyborg, a technique which he had learned through experiments on the resurrected Boris.

Eventually, the main task force, alongside the Ural Mountains force and Stalingrad force converged and laid siege to Moscow. Despite Yuri's trickery, the appearance of the near-unstoppable Hands of Ereshkigal, and the threat of Volkov, the Soviets finally managed to slay Yuri once and for all.

The Soviets declared ultimate victory over Epsilon and named the Soviet General as the new Premier. However, the Soviets were deceived. In truth, Yuri was simply a distraction and diverted the Soviets' attention away from his true endgame: the activation of the Mental Omega Device in Antarctica. Hours later, the oblivious Soviet General and his forces fell under the influence of the Mental Omega, resulting in the utter defeat of the Soviets to Epsilon.

The New World[]

Prior to losing his free will, the Soviet General sent a communication to his forces on the Moon to not return to Moscow, in order to save them from the Mental Omega's influence. Thus, a contingent of Soviet forces may have remained on the Moon, but their ultimate fate is so far unknown.

Technology level[]

TacticalNuke

Nuclear weapons are a simple but violent symbol of the Soviet Union's might.

While the Soviet Union possessed some exotic technology, such as the Iron Curtain, they were considered the least technologically sophisticated faction. Instead, the Soviets' military doctrine favored conventional weapons and massed armour battalions with high firepower to overwhelm their enemies. Although crude and simple, the Soviet war machine was nonetheless a highly effective fighting force.

Notable technology utilized by the Soviets include:

  • Tesla technology - The ability to control and direct electrical currents. Tesla technology has a diverse range of applications, from the creation of cost-effective power sources, to the weaponization of electricity in the form of the Tesla Trooper and Tesla Coil. The Russians specialize in this technology, with their Tesla Cruiser and their ability to overcharge tesla weaponry to boost its firepower.
  • Incendiary weapons - Incendiary weapons are notorious for their ability to sear through infantry and structure alike, as demonstrated by the Pyro, Foxtrot, and Borillo. The Latin Confederation specialize in this technology, demonstrated by the Buratinos' thermobaric missiles and Morales's incendiary sniper rifle. The Confederation also produced white phosphorus as a deadlier material for flame weaponry, but its production was thwarted by the Allies.
  • Demolitions - This set of technology includes Demolition Trucks or Bomb Buggies, suicide trucks that deliver explosive payloads to enemy structures.
  • Drones - Soviet forces occasionally deploy drones to support their armoured battalions. The Terror Drone latches onto an enemy tank, tearing it apart with its cutting devices. Repair drones do exactly as their name suggests. The Latin Confederation use Fury Drones, which lie hidden until they lunge in a fiery, suicidal attack against unsuspecting enemies.
  • Nuclear technology - The most infamous technology in the Soviet arsenal. Nuclear weapons are feared for their incredible destructive potential and their contamination of the environment. The Soviets employed tactical nukes as their superweapons, used miniaturized nuclear armaments for their Desolators and Eradicators, and provide enormous sums of power to Soviet bases. The MIDAS warhead was the most feared weapon of the Soviet arsenal, an immensely powerful, strategic nuclear bomb developed by Russia to intimidate the world into submission or risk nuclear annihilation. Only a few MIDAS warheads were ever produced, and thus, were highly valuable weapons.
  • Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) - EMPs are a disruptive burst of electromagnetic energy, used to disable enemy vehicles. It was used almost exclusively by China, allowing them to catch more nimble enemies, or win engagements against superior armoured forces. Chinese forces applied this technology in their EM Pulse, EMP Mines and Dragonflies. Other units, namely Volkov and the Tesla Cruiser, use tesla weaponry which produce an EMP effect. Contrary to expectations, the Chinese heroine Yunru does not use a true EMP, rather, she attacks electronic systems with a DDoS attack, rendering them useless.
  • Iron Curtain technology - The Iron Curtain is a defensive technology developed in the Second Great War. This device coats vehicles with vibrating particles, rendering the vehicle totally immune from any damage, as well as battlefield hazards like mind control or EMP. The Iron Guard is a localised iron curtain field that shields nearby tanks. While mostly defensive, the Iron Curtain has offensive uses, as seen in the experimental Iron Dragon, which fires an Iron Curtain effect that superheats infantry and vehicles in the target area.
  • Smoke bombs - Smoke bombs are used to hinder enemy battle performance by obscuring vision. Under the cover of a smokescreen, Soviet forces can destroy their enemies and emerge with few casualties. Smoke bombs are delivered primarily by Dustdevils, however, the Latin Confederation uses a heavier plane and a turret emplacement to achieve the same purpose.
  • Industrial plants - To ensure Soviet armour supremacy, Soviet Commanders make use of industrial processes to produce tanks cheaply.
  • Seismic weaponry - A possible evolution of the MAD Tank from the Second World War, Seismic weapons send shockwaves through the earth to damage enemy armour and structures. The Hammer Defense is one form of this technology used by all Soviet factions, originally invented by China. Yunru possesses a smaller, but paradoxically more powerful variant called the "Earth Breaker", capable of leveling entire bases not unlike the original MAD Tank.
  • Cybernetics - The Russians were the first to research cybernetics, culminating in the nigh unstoppable cyborg, Volkov, and his faithful companion, Chitzkoi. Possibly due to concerns of uncontrollable, berserk cyborgs running rampant, the Russians never built any successors to Volkov. Chinese forces loyal to Yunru, however, continue this research, producing the Cyborg Vanguard.

The Soviets originally possessed psychic and genetic technology. However, the design schematics were erased by Yuri when he betrayed the Soviet Union. Any remaining PsiCorps technology within Soviet hands were sabotaged by the Epsilon Army.

  • Psychics - The use of Psychic Beacons and Psychic Amplifiers were key in the Soviet stratagem to spread communism. Furthermore, the Soviet ranks included Epsilon Adepts, then known as PsiCorps Troopers. Other developments in this technology included the Psychic Sensor, which was used to predict enemy movements.
  • Cloning - During Yuri's association with the Soviets, genetic manipulation was in its infancy. Nevertheless, the Cloning Vats designed by PsiCorps were key structures to ensure the numerical superiority of Soviet forces.
  • Light tank designs - The Lasher Tank was originally a Soviet design, which seem to have been left in a prototype state. Epsilon agents stole this design to develop their own army.

Hailing from Central and South America, the Latin Confederation are the masters of guerilla warfare, particularly skilled in fast attacks and ambushes through their Mortar Quads and Fury Drones, as well as starting fires out of nowhere with Arsonists. The deadliest sniper ever known, Morales, is also at their service, completing their excellence.

China[]

Main article: China

The most populous country in the world, China prefers to advance on the battlefield through their slow but powerful war machines such as Qilin Tanks and Nuwa Cannons with EMP weaponry from their Dragonflies, heroine Yunru and EMP strikes to stop their enemies in their tracks and give enough time for the Chinese war machine to obliterate them.

Trivia[]

  • The real-world term "Soviet Union" technically refers to the successor state to the Russian Empire and encompassed Russia (and some other countries), but did not include the real-life China nor any countries that belong to Mental Omega's fictional Latin Confederation. However, in Mental Omega, the Soviet Union is often used to refer to the alliance between Russia, China, and the Latin Confederation.
  • The Sino-Russian split within the Mental Omega story mirrors the real-life Sino-Soviet split, where doctrinal differences between Soviet Russia and the PRC caused their relations to deteriorate and the two countries began to compete for prominence in the communist world.
