Suspecting the theft of their Stalin's Fist to be an inside job, the Russians have severely limited access to their weapons research and development. Without Soviet tech at their disposal, PsiCorps plots to steal older weapon designs to appropriate for themselves.
—Mission description

Operation: Human Shield is the fifth Epsilon Act One campaign mission.

Briefing[]

Yuri's Message: "Proselyte, I wish things could be for the better. While America has more or less broken down, and may as well have surrendered, we've had setbacks. The MIDAS missile attack on Chicago only increased the resolve of those fighting. Similarly, while Dugan's death has caused chaos in command, the effect has not been surrender, but instead a hardening of attitudes. Related to this, I'm in a world of trouble Proselyte - my psychic devices were supposed to be flawless, and the execution was stunning. The Amplifier was a key to my work in America - with it gone, and the prize city a ruin, my influence and authority in the High Command's eyes have diminished greatly. They are even talking of shutting down or breaking up PsiCorps. Furthermore, High Command took the incident of the Stalin's Fist much more seriously than I thought they would, and are locking people out of the Weapons Protocol.

But I am heading my bets elsewhere, in time you will know about it too Proselyte, but not just yet. Rashidi, thanks to our help, has taken up the war against the Americans in Africa with renewed vigor, and High Command suspects nothing. Granted, it was a close call in Africa with them going after our MCV prototype, but it got resolved. We need tanks for our own army, but we'll have to resort to prototypes and failed projects as a result of the Stalin's Fist incident. For now the Command believes it was European agents, so let them have "proof". Use Allied Spies to infiltrate factories in this warzone."

Objective 1: Eliminate Snipers guarding the Allied outpost.
Objective 2: Infiltrate 3 Soviet War Factories with Allied Spies.
Objective 3: Evacuate at least one of PsiCorps Troopers.

Events[]

Traversing the warzone[]

The two PsiCorps Troopers assigned for this operation reached the shore via a Borillo, and just as they disembarked, they were greeted right away by quite the scene - a Soviet group consisting of a Rhino Tank and two Conscripts was in the middle of engaging Allied hostiles - a Cavalier Tank and two GIs. The Proselyte gained battle control after both sides did battle, with the Allied combatants coming out on top - however, two Terror Drones entered the scene and killed the remaining Allied forces. The Proselyte was soon informed that the Russian military here will not recognize the PsiCorps Troopers, and will promptly open fire once spotted - this posed a huge problem due to the nearby Terror Drones being able to effortlessly get rid of the Proselyte's agents. As one of the PsiCorps Troopers seized the mind of a nearby Conscript, a solution has presented itself: The Conscript was used to lure the Terror Drones close to the barrels, then detonate them. The trick succeeded, with the pesky Terror Drones perishing in the resulting explosion, allowing the two PsiCorps Troopers to safely pass through the village.

The Proselyte used his PsiCorps Troopers to mind-control civilians and vehicles in the village to explore the battlefield, eventually witnessing yet another Allied-Soviet skirmish between their infantry. After they thinned each other out, the PsiCorps Troopers mopped up the remnants with their psychic blasts. The two found some Allied GIs on the way to the outpost and mind-controlled them. An Attack Dog noticed the situation and ran towards the group. The two GIs detonated a nearby barrel when the dog approached it, killing it in the process.

Once the PsiCorps Troopers got close enough to the Allied outpost, the Proselyte received a heads-up about two Snipers guarding the two entrances. The Proselyte then decided to separate the two PsiCorps Troopers. Using mind-controlled GIs, he drew the Snipers' fire as his agents approached then mind-controlled them, neutralizing the threat.

Once the Snipers were neutralized, the next orders were to identify and capture the Allied Spies required for infiltration.

Spies to mind-control, War Factories to infiltrate[]

The position of the three War Factories to infiltrate was revealed, and the Proselyte decided to open the road leading to them first. After the PsiCorps Troopers entered the city, the Euro Alliance paradropped more troops into the city, among them several Snipers. Once again the mind-controlled troops proved to be the perfect bait to spot the Snipers, allowing the PsiCorps Troopers to safely dispose of them.

The Snipers weren't the only obstacle in their way, however. As they advanced, several infantry units and a few Attack Dogs guarded the way. The PsiCorps Troopers made use of their psychic blasts to fend off the dogs and thinned out enemy infantry along the way via mind-control, allowing them to advance. The two agents needed to get rid of the nearby Sentry Guns, as they would make short work of them if approached too closely - conveniently enough, they saw a few prototype Lasher Tanks parked nearby, and used them to destroy the defenses opening up more of the area for safe movements. The mind-controlled Lasher Tanks were sent along the northern cliff to clear a path for the Spies to cross.

Now that the road leading to the designated War Factories was open, the next thing the Proselyte needed to do was finding the Spies in the camp. The problem was that the Spies in the outpost were disguised as Conscripts, hidden among a bunch of random POWs. Once the northern cliff was clear, the Psi-Corps Troopers picked out the troops in the camp one by one, eventually singling out the actual Spies from the crowd. Once that was accomplished, the Proselyte then sent the mind-controlled Spies into the Soviet War Factories, infiltrating them.

The evacuation[]

After all three War Factories were infiltrated, the Proselyte needed to evacuate at least one surviving PsiCorps Trooper from the area. They quickly made their way to the evac point south of the Soviet base, killing the remaining obstacles on the way. The PsiCorps Troopers boarded the Borillo and withdrew from the area.

Aftermath[]

With your mission successfully carried out, the focus has once again shifted from our agents to the Allied espionage teams. The weapon designs you have stolen will prove to be crucial in the development of our own army.
—Yuri's message

The false-flag operation was a resounding success. Not only did it shift the blame for the theft of the Stalin's Fist from PsiCorps onto Allied agents, allowing Yuri to regain some of the lost goodwill with Russian High Command, it also allowed them to acquire the shelved blueprints for the prototype Soviet tank developed at the Primorsk facility - a tank design which would be refined and eventually form the backbone of PsiCorps tank divisions.

However, the Proselyte couldn't relax just yet. Soon after this success, a dire emergency has occurred: an Allied team managed to capture the very prototype of the MCV developed by Rashidi to study the deployed structure. The Soviet forces in Africa took an interest in the enigmatic construct as well, intending to seize it. Not wanting the Allies, and especially the Soviets to find out too much, Yuri decided to send the Proselyte to Morocco to recapture or destroy the seized prototype.

Easter egg[]

SPOILER
Get your hotdogs here!

In the area between the locations of the Snipers, there is a Mr. Yummy's Hot Dogs prop blocked by fences. If these fences are destroyed by, for instance, a main battle tank, two veterancy crates and an armor upgrade crate will appear, while the prop itself is destroyed. The easter egg is successfully discovered if the quote mentioned above is spoken.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In version 3.0, Shadow Ring was not available in this mission.
  • Prior to Version 3.3.5, there were two voice quotes from Yuri in the mission, recorded by De'Lante Capers. See here for details.
